What loving unconditionally means to me

Before I share what loving unconditionally means to me, I will talk about what loving unconditionally does not mean to me. It does not mean that  I deserve to be treated like a shmatta, a rag - to be criticized, stepped on, and taken advantage of. Loving unconditionally also does not mean that I spoil those around me, showering them with words of praise, goods and meeting their every whim.

To me, loving unconditionally means that I have compassion for those around me. I try to understand the situation from their perspective. I try to walk in their shoes. I am present for them.

What could be holding me back from loving unconditionally? what could be blocking my flow of love? my ego, for one, my pride and lack of compassion for those around me.

If my child is crying inconsolably, old me (prior to taking on meditation), might want to quiet him down, perhaps divert him, even give him consequences if he doesn't quiet down. New me, would try to understand the underlying reason why he is crying. New me would hopefully give him what he needs - my presence. I would sit with him and comfort him. Maybe being present is all that he would need for now to get over the flood of big emotions that are pouring out.

Being present means living fully in the here and now and not telling myself stories of what was, is and will be.

My mantra for today is “I am present.”
